Kindergarten – Grade 2
At the American School of Douala, we believe that a strong foundational education is the key to a successful future. Our Lower Elementary program nurtures young learners in a warm and engaging environment, where curiosity is celebrated and learning is a joyful adventure.
In lower elementary, we build on the experiences of Kindergarten, allowing children to play, explore, and collaborate with their peers. Our carefully crafted routines establish positive behavior for learning, while English immersion ensures that children expand their vocabulary and express their wonderings. We encourage them to ask questions because every inquiry leads to new learning for everyone in the class.
Our core subjects—reading, writing, math, science, and social studies—are designed to intertwine with integrated learning areas such as art, music, and physical education. Hands-on experiences and play-based activities ensure that learning is not just effective but also enjoyable.
We utilize the Journeys program to develop essential reading skills. Students will learn phonetic skills to decode words, gradually extending their reading abilities and focusing on comprehension. Writing is integrated into their experiences, encouraging children to reflect on tangible events rather than abstract concepts. This hands-on approach to language arts cultivates both their grammatical understanding and their ability to communicate effectively.
Our mathematics instruction is guided by the Math in Focus (Singapore Math) curriculum. This program emphasizes problem-solving with language-rich word problems, covering concepts from basic numbers to more complex operations up to 100. Children will explore concepts of time, measurement, geometry, and statistics, all while enjoying a playful and engaging approach to math.
In addition to core subjects, our Lower Elementary students benefit from integrated learning experiences in art, music, and physical education. We believe that hands-on learning and play-based activities are pivotal in nurturing a well-rounded education.
At the American School of Douala, we prioritize social-emotional learning (SEL) alongside academic achievement. Our initiatives focus on instilling values such as respect, responsibility, and kindness. Through activities like Circle Time, students learn to express their thoughts and solve problems collaboratively, ensuring a supportive classroom environment. Our Think-Pair-Share approach encourages active listening and respectful dialogue, fostering a sense of community among students.
Our classrooms are designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and focused learning. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, currently 12:1, every child receives personalized attention from dedicated educators and assistants. Our learning spaces are tailored to support diverse activities, whether it’s guided teaching sessions or playful exploration.
We believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Our Lower Elementary students have access to a variety of extracurricular activities, including drama, football, dance, taekwondo, yoga, and coding. We also encourage parental involvement through our PTA Committee, where parents can share their expertise and engage in community events.
