EARLY CHILDHOOD

Transitioning from Lower to Upper Elementary at ASD

The move to upper elementary (Grades 3–5) at the American School of Douala is a major milestone in a child’s academic journey. During this exciting phase, students dive into more complex learning while building the skills and confidence needed for middle school.

What to Expect

Upper elementary brings increased academic expectations and greater independence. Our curriculum, grounded in the AERO Common Core Standards, supports deeper thinking across all subjects.

  • Math: Math In Focus encourages problem-solving and visual learning, covering topics like fractions, decimals, and geometry.
  • Literacy: Into Reading builds strong comprehension, writing skills, and a lifelong love for books.
  • Science: Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, students explore topics like ecosystems and physics through hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

Building Digital Skills

Technology is fully integrated into daily lessons. Students use digital tools for math games, research projects, and collaborative learning—developing essential digital literacy for the future.

Growing as Leaders

We focus on character and leadership development:

  • Students take on roles in group projects and class activities
  • Monthly elections for classroom leadership
  • Public speaking opportunities through speeches and presentations

They also lead community service projects—supporting local wildlife centers, helping orphanages, and fundraising for sick children—fostering empathy and global awareness.

A Dynamic Learning Environment

Our classrooms are designed for collaboration and creativity, featuring:

  • Flexible seating and modern technology
  • Project-based learning across subjects
  • Specialized programs in STEM, arts, and languages

These opportunities help students discover new passions and build real-world skills.

Life Beyond the Classroom

From sports teams to after-school clubs, students at ASD stay active and involved. Participation in competitions and extracurriculars promotes teamwork, leadership, and school spirit.

Partnering with Parents

We know that strong home-school connections make a big difference. ASD provides:

  • Study tips and homework guidelines
  • Opportunities to volunteer in classrooms and attend school events

Together, we support every child’s growth and success.

Ready for What’s Next?

The transition to upper elementary at ASD is more than academic—it’s about growing in confidence, curiosity, and character. Our students leave prepared not only for middle school, but for the world beyond.
